Once you get all read up around here, you'll notice I'm already projecting Obama to win, and possibly with 60 senate votes to back him up. My question for everyone is what do we do next?
If the election goes as well as it can, we'll have two years of nearly complete control. What do we do with it? Do we go for broke and pass everything we can knowing the party won't last, or do we rule with the idea of cementing our power for many years to come? And, how would you go about doing so?
Good questions.
I'd say go for broke. The people want real change. They want stem cell research. They want job growth. First step I think is restoring progressivity in the tax rates so we can at least appear to be fiscally responsible.
Im recieving some hate e-mails from a post I have up on CL politics. Here is one.
"MUCH LIKE YOUR NAFTA LOVING DEMONCRATES WHO 14 YEARS AGO SET THE TREND FOR MASSIVE JOB LOSE AND FACTORYS MOVING OUT OF THE COUNTRY UH, WHAT IS MORE FUNNY IS AT LEAST YOU SUPPORT YOUR CHILDREN TO ACCEPT HOMOSEXUALITY AS A COURSE IN SCHOOL COMING TO YOUR AREA SOON, ALSO ASHAMED YOU WASNT ONE OF THEM THEY ALLOWED TO ABOARD.SO BLAME BUSH ALL YOU MUST YOU REALLY GOT A FULL MOUTH FULL OF WHAT LAW THE CLINTONS LEFT YOU, SURE YOU WAS BETTER OFF THEN BUT IT DIDNT TAKE EFFECT TIL 1997 CAN YOU SAY SO LONG AMERICA AS YOU ONCE NEW IT BECAUSE YOU SOON SHALL AND BY THE WAY DONT FORGET TO TURN IN YOUR GUNS CAUSE YOU WONT BE BUYING ANY AMMO NO WERE SOON EITHER STAGE 1 OF YOUR PROUD SELL OUT DEMONCRATES"

I know this does not fit in with the discussion going on right now, sorry.
Putting our mark on the budget and tax rates will happen in time, as much as I agree with the solution you pose. Surely, the first order of business will be whatever needs to be done to stablize credit and start creating jobs again. Remember the old bumper sticker that said to vote Democratic because the ass you save may be your own? I think our first act should be giving the American people a clear example of how that works by getting the economy going again.
After that, we should address the culture of greed that led to this mess to begin with. Lots of blame, recrimination, and finger pointing. There should be some hearings on the hill, complete with some good ol' fashioned grilling of some worthless corporate fat cats. Restoration of common sense regulations should follow, which should restore more confidence in the system while helping to focus anger on the most appropriate targets.
Then, once the American people know more about the culprits who caused all this misery and why, they'll be in a mood much more conducive to supporting the rest of our economic message (tax the rich, health care, education etc.). The idea is that the forces fighting against these changes will have been freshly discredited when it comes to all things economics. Right now, I don't think most Americans know who to be pissed at about the economy besides Bush.
I'm starting to wonder if my question was too big. We could probably spend weeks developing a nice wish list of shit to do and still have plenty left to cover. Overall, while I'm tempted to side with you that we should go for broke, I don't want to see this opportunity squandered because we tried to do too much too fast. If the American people are clearly against a particular thing, 70 votes in the senate won't do us a damn bit of good. A Republican fillibuster didn't kill Hillary's plan in '93, it was overwhelming public dissaproval being whipped up by corporate fat cats that caused moderate votes in both parties to turn tail. Remember Harry and Louise?
It's funny. We're talking about lessons learned here from the first 2 years of Clinton. They discussed it on Bill Maher on Friday.
I think with Obama it could be different. The more Obama talks about an issue, is views are generally better received by the public. He just has that touch.
I think in the first two years, Obama should go for his tax and health care reform in the first two years while working on behind the scenes to repair and improve broken government agencies. He should also be able to do a moonwalk out of Iraq which ought to have popular support.
Re Wabah-
Aw man "demoncrates." Priceless.
